While a lot of soda makers turned to pure cane sugar in lieu of high fructose corn syrup, only Oogave skipped over cane sugar in favor of organic agave nectar.
Now this is what I want in a natural and organic soda. Containing just carbonated water, organic agave nectar, citric acid and some natural flavors, about the only more natural drink would be water itself. Esteban’s Cola has just one more ingredient added to that list: caffeine.
Agave nectar is a natural sweetener that comes from the Agave plant, related to the american aloe plant. Agave resembles a large cactus and is grown mostly in Mexico and slowly making its way into the southwest. Originally it is used to make tequila, but recently has made its way into the sweetener market. Agave nectar has a very low Glycemic index, meaning your body absorbs it at a slower rate compared to other sweeteners.
Trying the root beer first, I noticed that familiar aroma when I popped open the bottle. There was a nice and smooth root beer taste, not too strong and not weak either. There was something noticeably different about this soda, the sweetening from the agave nectar had a honey like feel to it. I was also somewhat surprised by the lack of any kind of aftertaste. Probably due to the low amount of ingredients when compared to other sodas. As for the Cola, there wasn’t much in terms of smell, and the taste was pure and refreshing. There wasn’t much carbonation, and as a result I first thought it might be flat. Giving the bottle a quick shake livened up the soda with some fizz. It was very easy to drink, with a slight little hint of cola flavoring.
