Beaver Buzz CanHi, I’m Denise English, A.K.A. Denny, the Canadian and female component of SoftDrinkable. Coffee is my beverage of choice mostly, but I do consume a good variety of soft drinks.  This will be my first review as well as my introduction to energy drinks. While a beaver is the focus of this review, there are no extra “u’s” or moose to be seen.

According to their website The DD Beverage Co. is a Canadian company that was founded in May 2005 by three guys from British Columbia.  Their first drink was  Beaver Buzz Citrus Energy which was launched with great success in the Summer of 2005. (more…)

drank – Extreme Relaxation

drank canLately there has been a large movement in ‘anti-energy’ drinks, or ‘Relaxation’ sodas. We have actually reviewed few of them, but drank (spelled with a lowercase d) is a different type of relaxation. Innovative Beverage Group, the owners of drank, like to call it “Extreme Relaxation”. What makes drank different? It contains 1mg melatonin, 10mg  rose hips, and 10mg valerian root per serving. While rosehips and valerian root are generally regarded as safe, I was a little concerned about the melatonin ,which is a hormone produced by your brain to regulate your sleep cycle. This may cause you to become drowsy and/or fall asleep (the label on the can warns of this).

BlueSky Free - ColaMy experience with diet sodas is extremely limited, involving Diet Coca-Cola and Diet Dr. Pepper when I was a kid. I remember them having a very strong less than pleasing aftertaste. Introduced fairly recently, in 2009, Blue Sky Free is a diet label under the Blue Sky brand owned Hansen Natural. This may have just been a fluke but, my first attempt at opening it failed. The can was extremely difficult to get my finger under the pull tab. This was the same for every can in the six pack. I had to use my keys to get that initial opening.

Red Rock – Premium Cola

Red Rock Cola bottleRed Rock has rather long history, so it surprised me that I’ve never heard of it until now. Started in 1885 by Lee Hagan and G. T. Dodd in Atlanta, Georgia, the Red Rock Company was one the the earliest soda manufactures to arrive on the scene. The ginger ale and cola was very popular up until 1960s, so much so, as to be the only product endorsed by Babe Ruth, which much of the memorabilia shows. Unfortunately in the mid 1950s the company began to decline and by the 60s the company had gone under. Recently it has, however,  been acquired by Sensient Technologies of Indianapolis and is now available online.

Soda party anyone?

Various people have brought up the idea of a “soda tax”. The idea behind this is that by adding a tax to sugary drinks this will help fight obesity in today’s youth, raise funds to pay for health-care, and cover budget shortages. While this tax is being touted as the savior of all our troubles, one has to ask; how will consumers respond.

There’s no doubt that America has a problem with obesity. A study by the National Center for Health Statistics from the CDC found that 17.1% of children and adolescents between 2-19 years were overweight. That same study also found that 32.2% of adults were obese. While there are claims that soda plays a big part in America’s obesity, there are many factors that lead to overeating. Food manufacturers over the years have added more food to their products, the Triple Baconator from Wendy’s anyone? (more…)
